the old battery

the old battery

The Old Battery sits high above the Needles on the western tip of the Island.  Built to defended the nation from 1860 when a chain of defences were constructed around the Isle of Wight and the south coast to protect Portsmouth’s naval dockyards, from a perceived threat from France.  They are nicknamed Palmerston’s follies after Lord Palmerston the Prime Minister at the time.   The Old Battery consists of a Victorian Building housing an authentic 1940’s style tearoom and hallway which would be ideal for any 1940’s period filming or photography.  There is also a room which shows what it would have been like to work as a Victorian gunner.  Out side are two 12 tonne guns.  A tunnel leads to the cliff edge and houses a searchlight emplacement with spectacular view over the Needles and across the water to Dorset.

"The crew have found the Isle of Wight a really pleasant place to work and I doubt that they've missed sitting in traffic jams on the M25...!"

"I would wholeheartedly recommend Lobster Locations to any visiting Location Manager. Lisa has treated us with speed, friendliness and fairness throughout and she pulled several locations out of the hat for us. Her location owners clearly trust her and she knows a lot about the island as a whole. She's been a true ally and she makes me hope that I'll be back to film on the Isle of Wight again soon."
